Literacy Chicago - Literacy Programs

ESL

Our English as a Second Language (ESL) programs help learners improve their ability to speak, listen, read, and write in English so that they can enrich their participation in their communities. Students are from all over the world and at all ability levels, attending classes both in our downtown location and at partner sites through other community-based organizations around the city. The curriculum for these programs is tailored to specific learner needs and includes civics based instruction so students can increase access to daily needs that include the library, post office, and their own children’s education, among others.

Adult Literacy & GED

These programs serve those who have limited reading skills (many are at or below a fourth grade level) and those who are at a higher level but looking to pass the GED in order to increase job opportunities or higher education. We work with all levels of readers and provide both a classroom environment as well as one-on-one tutoring. Our goal is to help the learner where they need education the most. Many have job-specific goals, and many would like to simply read a book independently or read their mail. We have a variety of programs designed so that students can progress comfortably through them and receive an education that meets their needs.

Workforce Literacy

The Workforce Literacy component of our programming includes a compilation of innovative programs to help learners at all levels achieve workplace goals. We have a soft-skills training workshop series, an incumbent worker program called Literacy@Work that reaches individuals while on the job, and a strong presence in the hospitality industry that trains new employees as well as improves the skills of those at work. We are dedicated to providing workforce opportunities at all levels of ability and include both ESL as well as basic education and jobs training.
