Tutors
While our volunteer tutors come to Literacy Chicago to help others, they invariably realize that they gain as much from the experience as their students. Tutors are required to complete a state-mandated training workshop that takes place over two consecutive Saturdays. Once a tutor is matched with a student, they create a plan of action to address the student’s specific needs and interests. This can include help with general reading, English language and acculturation, or more task-oriented activities. To maintain continuity in learning, we request a commitment of a minimum of nine months. In order to fulfill our obligations for funding by the State of Illinois, tutors are asked to submit monthly time sheets.
Literacy Chicago increasingly relies on classroom tutors who work directly with our instructors to assist in various ways, including help with teaching key subjects and facilitating level-based conversation groups. Literacy Chicago continues to grow by adding off-site classes located in targeted communities. We are currently seeking tutors who are interested in traveling to these Chicago-area neighborhoods where the need for our services is critical.
Office
We welcome volunteers who are able to assist with basic operational responsibilities such as bookkeeping, filing, data entry, HR, or IT services. Please contact us via email indicating skills and interests; we will follow up with you. Students interested in fulfilling internship or service learning requirements are invited to contact us in this manner as well.
Committees
Participating in a Literacy Chicago committee is a great way to connect with a vibrant group of Chicago-area professionals while providing valuable assistance to the organization. Our committee members are an energetic, diverse group of business and community leaders.
Literacy Chicago would not exist without the dedication, energy, and commitment of our volunteers. Since we began in 1968, volunteers with diverse skills and interests have given their time and energy to help us serve a community in need. Each volunteer has been a great inspiration to Literacy Chicago students and staff alike.
